between themselves and jimmy lee dykes, but making every positive nuance they could get to connect him with that little boy. realize that mr. dykes we know was a father himself. he has a grown adult daughter. so all of these things would be very subtly rolled into the negotiations, and should mr. dykes be deceased at his own hands or at the hands of law enforcement, obviously that's a shame, but the thing that we want to see in a situation like this is, number one, we want the hostage to come out alive. number two, we want to protect law enforcement, and, number three, the hostage taker pretty much makes his own choice. for seven days they have extended to him the hand to come on out of that bunker and surrender himself. for seven days he's turned that down. he either made a decision himself today or law enforcement made a decision they were going to resolve it, and the positive thing is this little boy turning 6 on wednesday, he will be with his family to celebrate that birthday. >> well, as i say, our justice correspondent pete williams is reporting that a law enforcement official sa
is in midland city this morning. so, are police still in contact with jimmy lee dykes? the man who grabbed the little boy? >> they are and they have been constantly. we're told by one of the special agents with the fbi on scene that the line of communication is open 24 hours a day and they're ready to speak with jimmy lee dykes whenever he's ready to speak with them. the sheriff of dale county is also using the media to communicate with mr. dykes. he said during a news conference that he wants to thank mr. dykes to deliver medication and color books and potato chips. he thanks mr. dykes for taking care of our boy. communication on the other side, outside of that bunker. we're told that the parent of this 5-year-old boy, ethan, are getting updates around the clock every hour on the hour, randi. >> how is the community holding up? certainly you can imagine when the media descends there, they can't enjoy being on national tv all the time, certainly over a case like this. >> well, i can tell you, we haven't met that yet. they want this story to get out. someone here in town has set up a twitte

sixth straight day. law enforcement officials say this man, jimmy lee dykes, shot and killed a school bus driver and is holding a 5-year-old boy named ethan in an underground bunker. little ethan has some mild autism as well. gabe gutierrez joins us from midland city, alabama. gabe, we know authorities have been talking to dykes through that pvc pipe of some sort. do we know whether he's asking for anything? >> reporter: craig, we've been following this story for days. police are very tightlipped about what their communication with dykes involves. we don't know if he's making any demeans, but yesterday we did hear from the sheriff and saw some signs of how sensitive these negotiations have become. the shefb thariff thavsnked the for taking care of our child. law enforcement authorities may believe that the suspect has access to television in the bunker. he has an electric heater, blankets and treating the child relatively well and the child so far was not physically harmed, but not many details on the nature of the negotiations. this has been going on for more than 118 hours, since tu
